Mother Seriously Injured in Fairfield Crash, Frees Unharmed Child

Police are investigating a crash that left a West Caldwell woman suffering life-threatening injuries, while her 16-month-old son was reportedly unharmed, after the 1997 Mazda their where in slammed into a pole.

According to Chief Anthony Manna, officers responded to Greenbrook Road, near Passaic Avenue around 1:10 p.m., for a report of a crash.

The driver - only identified as a 38-year-old West Caldwell resident - while reportedly seriously injured managed to free her child and hand him over to a witness right before passing out at the scene.

Upon arrival, the seriously injured woman was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson for treatment, the chief added.

The child, who was in a child safety seat, was taken to hospital for evaluation but appeared to be uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.
