Montclair State University's Decision to Open Campus During Snow Storm has Staff, Students, Alumni Displeased

Montclair New Jersey

The University remains open and evening classes will be in session (MSU official statement released at 8 a.m.)

Hundreds inserted comments of displeasure on the school's Facebook page after officials at Montclair State University left an 8 a.m. message to it's educational community that the campus would open as scheduled during today's snowstorm that dumped about 8 inches in the Upper Montclair area. University officials left this statement on their Facebook page at around 3:30 p.m.:

The University remains open and evening classes will be in session.

Mass transit is operational and is generally the best option in wintry weather. Highways and access roads in the campus region are functioning. Students traveling by car are advised to leave ample time and drive safely. As always, students who need assistance with special issues may be in touch with the Office of the Dean of Students.

Our visit to the upper Montclair area was met with treacherous conditions on side streets near the University. Some students on campus complained of unpaved walk ways and some access points of the campus impassable from snow acumulation.

"Apparently nothing has changed in the almost 40 years since I graduated. The school was always opened then too" an alumni reasoning with the University's decision said.

Princeton University was one of the other only University that held a 6 p.m. delayed opening.

University officials could not be reached for comments.
