Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Michael E. Lloyd of the Monroe Township Police Department said today that charges have been filed against a township man after he surrendered to police following an incident at his home.
Robert A. Witkowski, 47, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault during an incident of domestic violence, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, criminal mischief, hindering his apprehension and committing an offense as a previously convicted felon.
Bail has been set at $350,000
The charges were filed during an investigation by the Monroe Township Police Department after police resolved a potentially dangerous situation by convincing Witkowski to surrender following the incident at his home.
More than 20 law enforcement officers from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Special Operations Response Team (SORT) were dispatched shortly after police were called at 9:34 a.m. on May 20, 2016.
Witkowski surrendered at 12:55 p.m. following negotiations with SORT.
A woman who was located on a second floor of the home was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was treated for a head injury.
No shots were fired during the incident and no police officers were injured.
In addition to SORT, the Monroe Township Police Department was assisted by the Manalapan Police Department and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department, which provided a patrol dog.
