Monmouth University was placed on lockdown early this morning following reports of a threat (possibly of explosives), causing alarm among students and staff currently on campus for the summer sessions and other programs.
The lockdown was initiated shortly before 3:23 a.m. after multiple reports suggested a potential threat to the campus safety.
Campus security and several external agencies from Monmouth County swiftly responded to the situation.
They secured the campus perimeter and began a thorough search of various areas. In a statement released during the incident, university police advised:
"There is a lockdown on the main campus. Monmouth University Police, assisted by outside agencies, are checking various areas on the campus at this time. Please continue to shelter in place."
As of 4:14 a.m., those present on campus were still instructed to remain sheltered in place as the investigation continued.
Authorities have not yet identified the origin of the threat, and details about whether it was credible remain limited.
The situation remains fluid, and law enforcement officials are working diligently to ensure the safety of all individuals involved and determine the threat's credibility.
