Middle School Student Brings Loaded Gun to Newark Charter School

Newark

Police in Newark are investigating an incident where a juvenile brought a gun to a Charter School in the downtown.

Police learned about the weapon after school officials at North Star Middle School notified police before 2 p.m.

Officials at North Star Academy Downtown Middle School told parents the following:

“This afternoon, we learned that a Downtown Middle School student had a firearm in the school building.

Upon learning of this threat, leadership investigated and called a lockdown at DTMS and WPHS, and called the police.

Police arrived at the school, secured the weapon, and confirmed that it was safe to lift the lockdown.

All students and staff at DTMS and WPHS are safe and were accounted for during this time”.

Parents told RLS Media that the boy was 13-years-old and they were unaware of what he intended to do with the gun.

This is the second time this month that a student has entered one of North Star Charter School buildings with a loaded gun.

On May 16, a 6-year-old came to school with a loaded gun at the West Side Park building.

Police have not confirmed where the boy obtained the weapon at this time.
