Mays Landing Man Charged with Death of Good Samaritan Who Intervened in Domestic Dispute

Police charged a Mays Landing man with the death of a 54-year-old Good Samaritan, who was struck after attempting to intervene during a domestic dispute, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.

Authorities charged, Calvin Wiggins, 24, with Aggravated Manslaughter for the death of John Charlton, 54, of Mays Landing after he struck him.

Police charged Wiggins with Aggravated Assault Hamilton Township Police responded to the scene on November 2nd, where Calvin Wiggins was involved in a domestic dispute on the Route 40 roadway near the intersection of Cantillion Blvd.

Police said they believe that Charlton exited his vehicle and yelled at Wiggins to stop assaulting a woman when Wiggins allegedly punched him which subsequently caused him to fall to the ground and strike his head. Police said Carlton never regained consciousness.

Charlton - who had been hospitalized at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, since the Nov. 2 assault - died Sunday as a result of the injuries sustained.

The investigation was handled by Hamilton Township Police Detective Craig Clayton.

These charges are merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. In all criminal cases, a charged defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
