On this 13th day of Black History Month, RLS Media honors Mayor Kenneth Allen Gibson, a pioneering figure whose election as the 34th Mayor of Newark in 1970 marked a significant milestone in the city and the nation's history.
Gibson's election shattered a racial barrier, making him the first African American to lead a significant Northeastern city in the United States.
Gibson's tenure from 1970 to 1986 was a period of profound transformation for Newark, a city grappling with the challenges of deindustrialization and seeking new directions for growth and equality.
Representing the hopes and aspirations of Newark's large African-American community, many of whom were part of or descendants of the Great Migration, Gibson aimed to revitalize a city facing economic decline and social strife.
In 1976, Gibson's leadership and dedication to urban renewal were recognized on a national level when he became the first African-American president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
His commitment to public service was further acknowledged in 1979 when he received the prestigious U.S. Senator John Heinz Award for Greatest Public Service by an Elected or Appointed Official.
Despite facing challenges, including unsuccessful runs for the Democratic nomination for New Jersey governor, Gibson's most gratifying achievement, as he shared in a 2005 New York Times interview, was the significant improvements he brought to Newark's health services.
Under his leadership, the city saw a marked reduction in tuberculosis rates, infant mortality, and maternal deaths during childbirth.
Kenneth A. Gibson's legacy continued to resonate after his passing on March 29, 2019, at the age of 86.
His funeral services, held at Newark Symphony Hall, and the designation of Broad Street by current Honorable Mayor Ras J. Baraka as Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard in May 2019 are testaments to his enduring impact on The City of Newark.
