Massive Delay for EMS Response After Hit-and-Run Car Plows Into Man in Newark's Ironbound Section

Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified  of a pedestrian strike that left a man severely injured on a street in Newark's Ironbound section Thursday night.

Horrified residents watched the barely conscious unidentified adult male lay on the ground bleeding profusely from his head for over 30 minutes while waiting for EMS to arrive.\According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 9:28 p.m., Newark Police and firefighters rushed to the vicinity of 352 New York Avenue -at Napoleon Street- after residents dialed 911 when a speeding car plowed into the man then sped away from the scene.

Police and firefighters arrived and began to aid the man while angry residents questioned the extremely late EMS response/arrival.

While the victim bled out on the street and several calls were made to 911 to rush an ambulance, police officers learned that the vehicle that struck the victim fled the scene with damage to the windshield, residents told RLS Media.

Police say a silver Toyota occupied by at least two people crashed into the man causing severe head and neck injuries.

Authorities believe the vehicle is wanted for about three armed robberies in Newark's East Ward before slamming into the pedestrian.

EMS units arrived at the scene around 10:14 p.m. to transport the victim to University Hospital for treatment. We could only confirm the man's condition as "severely critical."

 The driver remains at large.
