A fire that ignited inside a utility hole in Union caused temporary power outages to over 1000 homes and businesses in parts of Union, Hillside, and Irvington Township Friday evening.
According to preliminary reports, firefighters were called to Vauxhall Road near Hilton Avenue for reports of a fire inside a manhole at around 9 p.m.
Police were called to the scene to close the I-78 off-ramp as firefighters extinguished the small blaze.
Utility crews from PSEG arrived to assess the situation and make necessary repairs according to reports.
Many of the affected customers had power restored within the hour.
Officials are investigating the cause.
