Man Struck by Alleged Drunk Driver in Harrison Remans Critical

A 62-year-old Harrison man is in critical condition after he was struck by a man accused of driving drunk.

Police were called to Manor Avenue just before midnight Saturday for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Upon arrival, police found the unidentified pedestrian who was attempting to cross the street to get to his house when he was hit by a Ford Fusion, driven by 32-year-old Ryan Starr, also of Harrison.

According to driver, the lack of street lights in the area resulting in the incident. However, police quickly noticed that Starr's speech was slurred.

A sobriety test determined Starr's blood alcohol level was 0.21 on a Breathalyzer test.

The victim was transported to University Hospital in Newark, for treatment on a fractured skull and hemorrhaging of the brain. According to police, he is listed in critical but not stable condition.

The driver has been charged with DWI and assault by auto by a drunken driver.
