Man Shot Dead in Newark's South Ward Identified by Authorities

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a male was fatally shot in Newark's South Ward late Saturday night.

Authorities said, at approximately 9:45 p..m, Newark police officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Irvine Turner boulevard on a report of shots fired.

Arriving officers discovered a male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds lying in a driveway of a residence.

The victim was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m.

The victim has been identified as Akbar J. Scott, age 42 of Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
