A man was fatally shot in Newark's South Ward on Monday afternoon, prompting an ongoing investigation led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
According to officials, a ShotSpotter device detected multiple rounds of gunfire near the intersection of Renner Avenue and Bergen Street, alerting police to the scene around 5 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered an unconscious and unresponsive male victim lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.
Responders administered CPR and rushed the victim to University Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
No arrests have been reported, and authorities have not yet disclosed the victim's identity. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is actively investigating the incident.
