According to authorities, shortly before 3:30 this evening, members of the Police Division’s Emergency Response Team utilized less than lethal force to apprehend a domestic violence suspect armed with a knife who refused to exit his Dillard Court residence after stabbing his wife.
Police said at around 11:20 a.m., Newark Police responded to a domestic violence incident where a 64-year-old man repeatedly stabbed his 59-year-old wife.
As police arrived, two Good Samaritans were helping the wife escape the residence.
She was immediately taken to Rutgers Medical School where she remains in critical condition.
The suspect remained in his house repeatedly threatening to stab himself as hostage negotiators attempted to convince him to surrender.
After failed negotiations and continuing to pose a threat, emergency response officers utilized less than lethal force to enter the house and arrest the suspect.
The suspect who is charged with domestic violence offenses was transported to a local hospital crisis unit to be evaluated.
Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose commended all officers involved in this barricaded person incident, particularly those from the Emergency Response Team who arrested the suspect before he could injure himself or one of several 1st responders at the scene.
