Man Pleads Guilty in Connection to Death of Newark Pizza Delivery Man

Al-Shaqar Williams, 18, of Newark, plead guilty to a weapons offense in connection with the shooting death of Jesus Torres on Sept. 1, 2013.

In the date of the incident, Torres - a pizza delivery man - crashed his car near the intersection of 13th Avenue and South 11thStreet, when the six defendants surrounded the vehicle. 

According to reports, one of the defendants allegedly told the group that he wanted to damage Torres's car because the collision supposedly disrupted a block party they were attending.

In court today, Williams admitted to giving Ibn Muhammed the gun. According to Williams, he gave the gun to Muhammed, because he allegedly thought Muhammed was just going to scare Torres, but claims was not aware he was going to shoot him.

Prosecutor agreed to recommend a five-year prison sentence in exchange of Williams' guilty plea to a charge of possession of a handgun without a permit.

Before Williams becomes available for parole he must serve three years.

Muhammed on Aug. 4 admitted shooting Torres pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter and a weapons offense.

Under a plea deal, a 17-year prison sentence was recommended for Muhammed. He must serve more than 14 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Shaquille Faines, 23, Solomon Williams, 20, and Lonnie Simmons, 19, all of Newark also pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering an injured victim. 

Another defendant, Raymond Hiers, 18, also of Newark, pleaded guilty on Aug. 4 to possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. That weapon was the bicycle, which Hiers admitted throwing through the window of Torres's car.

Men will receive credit for time served in exchange for their guilty pleas.

Williams remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility.

Sentencings for all six defendants are scheduled for Sept. 21 before Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner.
