Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder After Attacking Woman in Atlantic City

Atlantic City

A Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty to attempted murder after an attack on a woman in Atlantic City in July 2017, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.

Officials say David Legette, 54, of Bristol Township, PA, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of Attempted Murder.

According to police, on July 2, 2017, Legette met up with a Pennsylvania woman who had an active restraining order against him, following a previous romantic relationship. Around 10 p.m., on July 2, 2017, Legette and the victim were in the Caesar’s parking garage when he pulled out a knife and stabbed her 19 times.

Legette then child-locked the car doors so she could not escape. As he drove down Atlantic Avenue in Ventnor, the victim was able to reach out of the window and open the car door from the outside. She rolled herself out of the driver side rear door and into the middle of Atlantic Avenue.

Officials said witnesses saw her throw herself from the vehicle and her injuries included numerous stab wounds, a partially eviscerated intestine and a lacerated liver and spleen. Legette sped away in his car and witnesses called 911. At the scene, the victim was able to identify Legette as the individual that stabbed her.

Authorities located Legette on July 20, 2017, in Bristol and he was arrested. Legette’s vehicle was impounded and the victim’s DNA was found inside.

Officials said Legette will be sentenced on July 20, 2018, exactly one year from the date of his arrest. He will be sentenced to 16 years in a New Jersey state prison, subject to the No Early Release Act and upon release will be subject to five years of parole.
