A male gunshot victim suffered non-fatal injuries in a shooting incident that occurred late Friday night in Newark's South Ward. The incident took place around 11 p.m. near 139 Chadwick Avenue.
Newark police were alerted to the shooting by a ShotSpotter device, which detected multiple rounds fired.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a vehicle that had been struck by several bullets and found shell casings scattered on the ground.
Initial investigation at the scene indicated that someone had been shot, although no victim was found there.
Shortly after that, officials at University Hospital notified the Newark Police that a male victim had entered the emergency room with bullet wounds.
Police believe this individual was the one struck by gunfire at the Chadwick Avenue location.
The motive behind the shooting has not yet been determined, and the suspect involved has fled the scene and remains at large.
Newark Police have cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation into the violent encounter.
