Police are investigating a shooting that left one man injured in Newark’s Central Ward on Saturday afternoon, prompting a swift response from law enforcement near a local school and housing development.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred just before 3:35 p.m. in the 60s block of Hayes Street, where multiple gunshots were reported.

Responding officers arrived quickly and secured the area near New Horizon Charter School after locating shell casings and other evidence indicating a shooting had taken place.

Shortly after the initial response, police located the injured victim on Springfield Avenue.
Authorities say the man sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Due to the urgency of the situation, officers transported him to University Hospital in a patrol car. He is currently listed in stable condition, according to officials.

Police also searched areas around the nearby New Community housing development for any additional victims or suspects.

As of now, no arrests have been made and no further injuries have been reported.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Newark authorities.
