A Union County grand jury has returned a four-count indictment against the person charged in connection with a shooting that killed one person and injured another in Plainfield last December, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Thursday.
Isaiah Mayo-Givens, 23, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and two related weapons offenses.
According to authorities, at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 2016, 18-year-old Manuel Berrios of Plainfield and a second male, then 26, were struck by gunfire on the 600 block of East Third Street in Plainfield, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Jillian Reyes, who is prosecuting the case. Both victims were transported to a local hospital for emergency surgery, but Berrios did not survive, Reyes said.
An investigation involving the Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Task Force, Plainfield Police Division, Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit resulted in Mayo-Givens being identified as a suspect in the case.
He was arrested without incident in early June at a residence in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick (Middlesex County) and subsequently lodged in Union County Jail.

Convictions on charges of this nature are commonly punishable by terms of 30 years to life in state prison.
