Man Guilty of Assault and Burglarizing United Hospital

Newark

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an Essex County jury has convicted Vincent Smith, 49, of Newark of second degree burglary and third degree aggravated assault following a four day trial before the Honorable John Gizzo, Judge of the Superior Court.

Smith was accused of breaking into the old United Hospital Building and attacking a security guard with a pipe when confronted. The hospital has since been demolished.

Today, Smith was found guilty of aggravated assault and burglary but acquitted of weapons offenses, according to Assistant Prosecutor David Feldman, who tried the case.

“This incident is part of a string of criminal offenses committed by this defendant. For that reason, we will be seeking an extended prison sentence for him,’’ said Feldman.

Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2016. Smith has 15 prior felony convictions ranging from distribution of narcotics to aggravated assault, including multiple burglaries. Under the No Early Release Act, Smith could face up to 20 years in prison.
