A raging and fast-moving fire in Newark’s West Ward claimed the life of a 44-year-old man and his dog early Saturday, prompting an investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities said the victim, identified as Khalil Hardaway, was in his first-floor apartment on South 11th Street when the blaze broke out.

The fire spread quickly through the residence, trapping Hardaway inside.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but Hardaway—who was disabled and had limited mobility—was pronounced dead at the scene.

His pit bull also did not survive the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local officials and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Task Force.

Further details have not yet been released.
