Newark Police officials are looking into the motive for an attack that left a man seriously injured on a street in Newark's North Ward on Saturday.
The early morning incident happened near 71 Wakeman Avenue just before 2:40 a.m.
According to a statement released by Newark Police officials, officers responded to reports of a fight in progress.
When police arrived, they found a male suffering blunt force trauma to his head at the location. He was rushed to Univesity Hospital for treatment and remained in serious condition.
Residents in the area said they heard a series of gunfire on Wakeman Avenue around the same time and thought that the victim was shot after seeing him lying on the pavement.
Newark Police officials said the incident remains under investigation.
