Man Attempting to Set House on Fire Attacks Linden Police Officer

Police in Linden are investigating an incident where an officer was attacked by a man in the city on Sunday morning.

According to a statement released by police, the incident happened at approximately 10:45 a.m. where officers responded to the 600 block of Chandler Avenue after family members reported that a 23-year-old man was attempting to light his home on fire.

Police officials said the suspect ignited a mattress on fire then ran from the home.

According to authorities, officers arriving on the scene immediately confronted the suspect as he left the house.

The suspect quickly turned, assaulted the officer, and continued to run from the scene according to police.

Officers ultimately apprehended the man in the area of E. Blancke Street and Baltimore Avenue police said.

Authorities say the fire was quickly extinguished by the Linden Fire Department.

The assaulted officer was transported to University Hospital in Newark suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A second officer was treated for minor injuries at Trinitas Hospital and a third officer was treated for smoke inhalation at RWJBH in Rahway.
