A Perth Amboy man assaulted a Mountainside officer then led police on a chase down Route 22 Tuesday morning, according to police.
Yesterday, an officer pulled over Keith Atkinson, 41, of Perth Amboy, for speeding around 4 a.m. on Route 22 West near Glenside Avenue, Lt. Allan Attanasio said today.
During the stop, the officer observed a loaded ammunition magazine on the seat of Atkinson's car, said the lieutenant.
In Atkinson attempt to flee, he assaulted the officer who tried to prevent him from fleeing, Attanasio said.
In the course of the pursuit, Atkinson was seen throwing the alleged ammunition from the car. Despite the search of the highway and vehicle, ammunition was not recovered.
The officer pursued Atkinson on Route 22 westbound to an apartment complex near North Drive in North Plainfield where he was placed under arrest.
Atkinson was charged with second degree eluding, third degree resisting arrest, fourth degree aggravated assault and fourth degree destruction of evidence, speeding and reckless driving.
He is being held at the Union County Jail with bail set at $37,000 with no 10 percent option.
