Man Arrested for September Murder in Jersey City

Police arrested a man on Tuesday who was wanted for murdering a Jersey City man in September.

According to authorities, Kenneth Barnes, age 19, of Jersey City was arrested by detectives from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide and Gang Unit for the murder of Shaheer Parson, age 35, of Jersey City.

Barnes has been charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3; Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3 and N.J.S. 2C:5-1; two counts of Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S. 2C:12-1; Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-5. Bail has been set at $1,000,000 cash only authorities said.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide and Gang Unit and the Jersey City Police Department for the arrest.

According Suarez, on September 11, 2016 at approximately 2:10 a.m., Jersey City Police were dispatched to Van Wagenen Avenue in Jersey City on a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival at 87 Van Wagenen Avenue, police found an unresponsive male victim, Shaheer Parson, age 35, of Jersey City, with gunshots to his upper body.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2:20 a.m.

A medical examiner determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound and the manner of death to be homicide.

Police Officers also found three female victims with non-life threatening injuries at 95 Van Wagenen Avenue.

Nina Green, age 32, of Jersey City had one gunshot wound to an upper extremity. Diana Green, age 35, of Jersey City had several gunshot wounds to an upper extremity.

Leslie Smith, age 24, of Jersey City had one gunshot wound to an upper extremity.

All three female victims were treated at the scene and transported to Jersey City Medical Center for additional treatment and were listed in stable condition.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
