The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will handle the investigation which involved a dirt bike crash that left a male injured in Newark's South Ward on Tuesday evening.
According to preliminary reports released by Newark Police, A Sergeant responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of 462 Clinton Place at around 4:30 p.m. where they arrived to find multiple shell casings at that location.
Witnesses reported to police that a male suspect fired the shots while on a dirt bike shortly before he sped away from the scene.
Police reportedly caught up with the alleged suspect in the area of Badger and Madison avenues where they began to follow him when he refused to stop for police authorities said.
The suspect ultimately crashed the bike into a parked car on Madison Avenue where suffered life-threatening injuries but is currently stable Newark Police said.
Police say the unidentified suspect was found with a loaded gun and drugs in his possession.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office would only confirm that they are investigating the incident but would not release additional info.
A female victim was self-transported to Beth Israel Hospital suffering a non-life threatening gunshot wound during the shots fired incident that occurred on Madison Avenue according to reports.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
