Local Teachers’ Union to Receive $6M Settlement from Elizabeth BOE

Elizabeth

The EEA announced that with the advisement of the NJEA attorneys, a settlement agreement with the Elizabeth Board of Education has been reached a $6 million settlement on the K-8 instructional time grievance arbitration.

The Settlement is based on the number of excess periods that have been quantified per member and a payment formula that will be applied. All K-8 teachers from the district's 32 schools, impacted, reportedly were scheduled to work in excess of 723,580 periods for approximately the past six years.

The approximately 500-600 members impacted by the k-8 grievance could receive awards raging anywhere from several hundred dollars to over $14,000.

The Elizabeth Board of Education will contact those affected via letter, outlining the amount of excess periods they were scheduled to work over the contractual obligation and their respective payment as part of the settlement. Payments are expected to be issued beginning July 30.
