Life in Prison for Newark Man Guilty of Murder

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Honorable Peter A. Ryan, Judge of the Superior Court,sentenced Olajuwan Herbert, 24, of Newark to life in prison for the murder of Harold Claudio, 28, also of Newark.

The case was tried by Assistant Prosecutor John Wilson, Jr.

Authorities said that on June 9, 2012, Claudio was fatally shot in the area of 26 Thomas Street in Newark. In November 2014 an Essex County jury found Herbert guilty of murder and weapons offenses authorities said. 

At trial, two witnesses identified Herbert as the shooter. According to the Medical Examiner’s report, the victim sustained grave injuries to the head and extremities. 

Herbert has one prior indictable charge for a 2007 murder but that charge was dismissed. He has a lengthy arrest history and juvenile record according to authorities.
