The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a double shooting that left one person dead in Newark Friday.
Police were notified of the late-night shooting after a ShotSpotter device activated in the area of Jay and Orange streets just before 11:30 p.m.
Police arrived at the scene and found a male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the vicinity of 294 Orange Street.
EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital for treatment, but while police were at the medical center, they learned that a second victim was dropped off, suffering gunshot wounds.
Detectives determined that both males were shots at the Orange Street crime scene.
Doctors at University Hospital pronounced one of the victims dead shortly after arriving.
The motive for the shootings was under investigation and the suspect fled the scene and remained at large.
