As the first day of Kwanzaa, celebrating the principle of Umoja (Unity) dawns, New Jersey residents are experiencing a brisk and chilly morning.
Temperatures have dipped to 27 degrees in Newark, signaling a frigid start to the holiday.
The chill is more pronounced in Sussex County, where Sparta records a mere 11 degrees. Morristown and Haledon in Passaic County are not far behind, with temperatures at 17 and 22 degrees, respectively.
Despite the cold, NWS meteorologists say the day promises improvement, with sunny skies and an expected high of 34 degrees, though wind chill values will hover between 20 and 30.
Those planning to return Christmas gifts or head to shopping centers will want to bundle up to stay warm.
Tonight's forecast remains mostly clear, with a low of around 22 degrees and calm winds.
As the community comes together to celebrate Kwanzaa and its values, the National Weather Service advises everyone to dress warmly and enjoy the holiday safely.
