An Old Bridge police officer shot and killed a man inside his home after man threatened to attacked a family member and an officer with a knife.
Officials said that 75-year-old Talbot Schroeder was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 6:30 this morning, according to County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.
Police responded to the home shortly before 6 a.m. for a domestic disturbance. Initial investigation revealed that man confronted responding officer with a large kitchen knife.
According to reports, Old Bridge police officer repeatedly warned man to drop the knife, but did not comply.
Schroeder attacked a family member and threatened a second family member before injuring himself with a knife, officials said.
The family member attacked, suffered minor injuries, according to officials.
Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is handling the investigation and has notified the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General in accordance with state guidelines.
