A late night assault on a convenience store clerk in Newark has a juvenile in custody.
Reports of an arrmed robbery in progress of the "On the Run" convenience store on Elizabeth Avenue sent several police units to the scene at around 11:30 p.m.
Units arrived to the scene found that the doors were locked with occupants inside the store.
Uncertain on what was happening inside, officers immediately requested additional units to the scene.
Officers eventually gained access into the store by a store employee when they learned that a juvenile (at some point before their arrival) began a violent attack on one of the clerks.
According to the clerk, the suspect had frequented the store several times in the past without an issues.
"I don't know what the the young man's issue was tonight. He just picked an argument then started to attack me" one of the store clerks said.
"We did not want him to leave before police came so we locked the doors so he couldn't escape" the clerk continued.
The clerk said that another employee assisted in fighting off the attacking juvenile.
Police located the juvenile inside the store and placed him under arrest.
EMS were called to the scene to treat the victim and the suspect.
