Jury Convicts Irvington Man of Armed Robbery

Newark New Jersey

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an Essex County jury has convicted Ibn Maurice Anthony, 22, of Irvington of robbing a 61-year-old Newark man in his driveway.

After a day of deliberating, following a trial before the Honorable Alfonse Cifelli, Anthony was found guilty on Friday of conspiracy, armed robbery and weapons offenses.

The robbery occurred on Dec. 18, 2012 in Newark. The victim was exiting his car when the defendant and two others approached and demanded his money and keys to his vehicle, according to Assistant Prosecutor Olajide Araromi, who tried the case. They held the victim at gunpoint, rummaged through his car and took his wallet and other personal belongings.

“The victim in this case was a hardworking man on his way home. He was held at gunpoint and robbed in his own driveway. The verdict in this case illustrates that residents of Essex County want a safe community and they are willing to convict those whose conduct threatens the safety and serenity of the community,’’ said Prosecutor Araromi.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 26 before Judge Cifelli. Anthony faces 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison. He has two prior convictions; one for unlawful possession of weapon and another for resisting arrest.
