Police in Newark and Belleville temporarily closed off a section of NJ-21 after a person threatened to jump from the highway into the Passaic River early Monday morning.
According to a preliminary investigation, Belleville Police spotted the male in the northbound lanes of the highway near exit seven.
They began negotiating with the emotionally distressed victim as he continued to threaten to jump into the Passaic River's frigid waters just before 1:30 a.m.
Newark police closed off-highway at 3rd Avenue while Belleville continued to talk to the male.
Police brought the situation under control and secured the attempted jumper just before 1:50 a.m., according to reports.
There were no injuries reported.
