Jersey City Officials Encourage Residents to Take Advantage of City Resources to Keep Cool During Excessive Heat

Jersey City

Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Office of Emergency Management encourage Jersey City residents to utilize cooling centers and all available City resources amid this week’s heat advisories as temperatures reach 100 degrees, reports say.

“Summer is in full swing with high heat and humidity in the forecast, so it is important that we remind residents to stay safe, cool and hydrated and check on neighbors who might need assistance,” said Mayor Fulop. “We have opened cooling centers, municipal pools, and libraries as a resource, and I encourage those in need to take advantage during the heatwave.”

According to reports, the Mary McLeod Bethune Community Center, 140 Martin Luther King Drive, will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m for all residents to cool off.

Reports say that for homeless individuals, Jersey City is partnering with the Garden State Episcopal CDC, 514 Newark Ave, to provide cool shelter.

Residents can also utilize all 10 of Jersey City’s Free Public Library locations on weekdays and Saturdays, reports say.

For anyone looking to have some fun while beating the heat, Jersey City’s 11 public pools and 15 water sprinklers locations in parks citywide are all open to the public. For a full list of pool and sprinkler times and locations, please visit the City’s website.

All residents, especially the elderly, disabled people, pregnant women, and children under the age of two, are encouraged to stay indoors or take advantage of the cooling facilities if necessary, according to reports.

County-run cooling centers include the Hudson County Wellness Center (124 Claremont Ave), St. Lucy’s Shelter (619 Grove Street), and the GSECDC Hudson CASA Drop in Center (514 Newark Ave). For a full list of cooling centers in Hudson County, please visit: https://www.nj211.org/nj-cooling-centers.
