A 22-year-old Jersey City man led police on a brief foot pursuit after he reportedly carjacked a vehicle Tuesday.
According to police, officers responded to Montgomery Street and Jordan Avenue after a vehicle carjacked from the area of Woodlawn and Bergen avenues was spotted at that location.
Upon arrival, police spotted a man - later identified as Marcus Benjamin, 22, - who fit the description of the reported carjacker. Benjamin ensued a brief pursuit which ended with his arrest at Jordan and Vroom Street.
Officers ultimately recovered 10 bags of suspected heroin under a vehicle, as well as the keys to the carjacked vehicle which he reportedly tossed during the pursuit.
Police charged Benjamin with carjacking, drug possession and possession with intent to distribute near a school and near public property.
The officers went around the block and when Benjamin saw them a second time, he took off running.
Police took Benjamin into custody at gun-point at Jordan and Vroom Street but not before he tossed 10 bags of suspected heroin under a vehicle, as well as the keys to the carjacked vehicle, the complaint says.
Benjamin was ordered detained through the course of his prosecution.
A detention hearing is set for Tuesday.
