A 28-year-old Jersey City man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision that left a woman seriously injured on New Year’s Day, according to a statement released by Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.
Matthew Small was taken into custody by members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
He faces charges of Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Assault by Auto, and Endangering an Injured Victim,
The charges stem from an incident that occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on January 1, 2025.
Officers from the Jersey City Police Department responded to reports of a pedestrian struck in the area of Communipaw Avenue and Marcy Avenue.
At the scene, officers found a 19-year-old female pedestrian with a serious upper-body injury.
The vehicle involved in the collision had fled the scene. The victim was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where she received treatment for her injuries.
Small was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and has been released pending his first court appearance, scheduled for January 30, 2025.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
