Authorities in Essex County are investigating a violent armed carjacking that resulted in the beating of at least one elderly person in Irvington Township, then a pursuit that ended in a car crash in Newark's West Ward on Thursday night.
Several attempts to reach Irvington Township officials regarding a statement on the matter was not immediately returned, but according to preliminary reports, Irvington Police began to chase a vehicle that was occupied by two suspects who brutally attacked then carjacked an elderly person at a location in the Township before 11:30 p.m.
According to reports, the driver of the carjacked vehicle sped at over 75 miles per hours until it entered the Newark city limits where it crashed into multiple cars which resulted in one of the vehicles to overturn then slam into the entrance of the Cozy Corner bar on South Orange Avenue and South 12th Street just before 11:45 p.m.
Two suspects -possibly juveniles- were apprehended at the scene then transported to University Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.
According to reports, one of the vehicle's that was struck was an Uber with the driver and one passenger inside; both suffered non-fatal injuries.
The incident is under investigation by Irvington Township Police.
