Irvington Township officials have introduced a new initiative aimed at empowering the senior community with essential knowledge on safety and crime prevention.
According to a statement released by The Honorable Mayor Tony Vauss and the Township Council, the Senior Police Academy program was launched on February 13, and will continue through March 5, 2025.
This innovative program stresses Mayor Vauss’s ongoing dedication to improving the well-being of Irvington’s senior residents. By equipping older adults with practical safety skills, the initiative seeks to foster a more secure and informed community.
The Senior Police Academy is being held at the Lebby C. Jones Senior Citizen Theater, located at 1077 Springfield Ave., Irvington, NJ. 4. Staying Vigilant in the Community: This session will focus on promoting awareness and vigilance among seniors. Participants will learn how to identify potential risks in their surroundings and the importance of reporting any unusual activity to law enforcement.
5. Introduction to Defense Tactics: Officers will demonstrate simple self-defense techniques that seniors can use to protect themselves. These tactics will emphasize avoidance and de-escalation strategies, empowering participants to feel safer in their daily lives.
6. Community Policing Initiatives: This segment will highlight the importance of community policing and how seniors can play an active role in fostering relationships with local law enforcement.
