The Honorable Mayor Tony Vauss of Irvington Township proudly announces significant advancements in public safety following the comprehensive assessment and subsequent implementation of recommendations by the Ambrose Group LLC for the Irvington Police Department (IPD) and the Irvington Fire Department.
Officials said about a year ago, Mayor Vauss initiated this strategic move by engaging the expertise of the Ambrose Group, led by the distinguished Anthony Ambrose, a veteran in law enforcement with 35 years of experience.
The Ambrose Group's thorough evaluation has provided critical insights and recommendations aimed at transforming the Public Safety Department.
The group's report, intended as a blueprint for excellence, highlights several areas for improvement, including staffing adjustments, upgrades to facilities, and the introduction of new technologies such as Mobile Video Recorders and a neighborhood security camera system.
In response to these recommendations, Irvington has embarked on a journey of continuous improvement, with Mayor Vauss committing to ongoing monitoring by the Ambrose Group.
This initiative extends beyond the police and fire departments, aiming to enhance the efficiency of other township departments as well.
Among the significant changes already underway are staffing and supervision policy revisions, ordinance updates, training enhancements, and improvements in evidence management.
The IPD has also introduced a Deputy Director position and revised its mission statement, reflecting a commitment to progress and community safety.
The results of these efforts are evident in the substantial reductions in crime rates observed from 2014 to 2023.
The township has seen a 70% decrease in murder rates, a nearly 60% reduction in robbery and assault cases, and an impressive 85% drop in burglaries.
Mayor Vauss, who assumed office in 2014 with the motto "Make Irvington clean and safe," has stayed true to his mission.
The successful collaboration with the Ambrose Group, along with the invaluable assistance of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Attorney General's Office, underscores the collective endeavor towards ensuring a secure environment for the residents of Irvington.
As Irvington continues on this path, Mayor Vauss and Public Safety Director Mr. Tracy Bowers, who has been instrumental in implementing the Ambrose Group's recommendations, look forward to building a safer, more prosperous community where residents can live without fear and look to the future with hope.
