During my visit to several schools in Irvington Township for the first day of school in early September, Dr. April Vauss highlighted several exciting new programs aimed at bringing innovation and rigor to the classroom.SupportThese initiatives expects to prepare students to graduate self-sufficient and capable, with one program even teaching them how to navigate the world of media through new journalism courses.

One significant success already delivered: a cutting-edge culinary program.

Irvington Public Schools has launched a comprehensive high school culinary arts program in a bold move to prepare students for future success.

Irvington This forward-thinking initiative aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in the food service and hospitality industries while also promoting creativity, wellness, and cultural awareness.

Dr. Vauss highlights that the program is not solely about learning culinary techniques but also about fostering entrepreneurial skills.

"We want our students to be ready for all aspects of life, including the ability to manage and own businesses," she said.

Her vision is to develop a new generation of business-minded individuals who are equipped to thrive in real-world environments.

Irvington A key feature of this new program is a fully outfitted food truck, recently purchased by the school district.

Serving as a mobile classroom, this food truck comes equipped with dual propane tanks, stainless steel appliances, including a pizza oven, refrigerators, double grills, and a TV display screen for showcasing menus.

This hands-on experience provides students a professional setting to learn about cooking, customer service, and business operations.

The program also emphasizes community engagement, giving students the chance to participate in local events and school functions.

These opportunities will allow them to showcase their culinary skills while learning about profit management, financial literacy, and the day-to-day challenges of running a business.

Dr. Vauss, deeply committed to the success of her students, has designed the program to offer invaluable experiences that will prepare Irvington's youth for bright futures.

Irvington The program's focus on both practical culinary training and entrepreneurship provides students with essential life skills while igniting their passion for business.

As the program kicks off, it represents the innovative spirit of Irvington Public Schools—where education is combined with opportunity, preparing students for future success.

The food truck will serve as both a training tool and a symbol of hope, encouraging students to take control of their futures and contribute to their community.SupportFor further information on the culinary arts program, contact the Irvington Public Schools' Office of Curriculum and Instruction at (973) 399-6800 ext. 2117.
