The Honorable Mayor Tony Vauss, in collaboration with Public Safety Director Tracy Bowers, has issued a public safety advisory in response to a growing wave of vehicle thefts in the township.
The advisory, directed at both residents and delivery drivers, emphasizes the importance of securing vehicles to prevent opportunistic crimes.
According to the Irvington Township Police Department, recent months have seen a sharp increase in car thefts, many of which stem from vehicles being left running and unattended—either while warming up or during quick delivery stops.
Officials warn that such negligence creates an easy target for criminals.
"Every resident and delivery driver has a role in keeping our streets safe," Mayor Vauss stated. "By taking simple precautions, we can significantly reduce the risk of theft and enhance the security of our community."
Authorities are urging residents and delivery personnel to adopt essential safety practices, including turning off engines and locking vehicles at all times.
"Leaving your car running is like an open invitation for thieves," Mayor Vauss cautioned.
In addition, the public is advised to remain vigilant in public areas and to report any suspicious activity immediately, as quick action can help law enforcement prevent further incidents.
Public Safety Director Bowers also stressed that individuals who leave their vehicles unattended with the engine running may face penalties.
"We have to hold ourselves accountable," he said. "If your car is left running and unattended, you could be subject to a citation."
Officials are encouraging residents to share these safety measures with friends, family, and colleagues, particularly those unfamiliar with local crime trends. "These are not just individual precautions—they are community responsibilities," Mayor Vauss added. "Every small action contributes to the broader goal of public safety."
