Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an Essex County Grand Jury has indicted Darryl Craft, 25, of Irvington on three counts, including murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose for the fatal shooting of Darnell Smith, 19, of Newark.

The indictment alleges that on Oct. 24, 2015 Craft murdered Smith outside a South 6th Street residence in Newark, according to Assistant Prosecutor Naazneen Khan, who is handling the case.

Smith was later rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Craft is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $1.2 million bail.

The arraignment for Craft is scheduled for June 27.

These are accusations.
