A man reportedly mad that the Jersey City shelter was closed, smashed their glass door and abandoned a sick cat on Monday.
According to authorities, officers just before noon responded to a call of property damage at the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City.
The property manager told police that the man attempted to get into the shelter but when he realized it was close, he allegedly broke the glass door.
According to a statement posted on the Liberty Humane Society’s Facebook page, the man got inside after breaking the door and then threw an injured cat in a box at one of the shelter's staff members.
"We try to stay positive, but this has staff rattled," the organization wrote. "Animal welfare can be a contentious place, and we're so grateful for our supporters who understand, empathize and lift us up as we continue this work, no matter what comes our way."
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Anyone who wishes to contribute with a donation to assist the center in replacing its door is asked to visit their Facebook page for details.
