An early morning incident that involved a police 'interaction' with a suspect who reportedly was armed with a weapon in an Elizabeth neighborhood has the suspect suffered injuries during the situation.
We are awaiting an information request from Elizabeth Police officials regarding the matter, but according to residents in the vicinity of Third and Court streets, they observed a significant police presence in the area at around 3:45 a.m. where a male was placed in an ambulance after the interaction with officers at that location.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect was rushed to University Hospital in Newark in an unknown condition after the encounter, but it's not clear if the suspect was shot by police at this time. Our on the scene crew observed the suspect's feet consistently moving inside the ambulance as medical personnel provided care.
Officers set up an extensive crime scene that spanned about a block long where detectives began searching the area for evidence and other possible suspects.
Our overnight crew observed officers place a male in handcuffs then transport him away to headquarters.
As soon as we get additional information from police officials, we will update this story.
**UPDATE 9:37 am: The Union County Prosecutor's Office is handling the incident**
The incident remains under investigation.
