The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office will host a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, August 21st, in honor of International Overdose Awareness Month.
This marks the third year of the event, which aims to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use-related deaths, raise awareness of the ongoing opioid crisis, and provide life-saving resources to the community.
The vigil will take place at Lincoln Park in Jersey City, near the track by Route 440, beginning at 6 p.m.
The event will feature a speaking program with members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, victim survivors, peer recovery specialists from RWJ Barnabas Health, representatives from Rubicon Recovery Center, and other advocates.
The evening will culminate in a moment of silence and a candlelight vigil to honor individuals and families affected by the opioid epidemic.
International Overdose Awareness Day is observed globally on August 31, with this year’s theme being "Together We Can."
“Substance use disorders do not discriminate—they affect people of all ages and backgrounds," said Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.
"The opioid epidemic has already devastated countless families, leaving many feeling lost and hopeless. Our office hosts this event each year because we believe that by working together, we can end the stigma, make recovery resources accessible, and support those on the path to recovery. Together, we can make a difference.”
A variety of community organizations will be present to share information and resources, including the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Hudson County Departments of Health and Human Services, Family Services and Reintegration, the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services, RWJBH Institute for Prevention and Recovery, Rubicon Recovery Center, Partners in Prevention, Kearny Prevention Coalition, and more.
