University Hospital in Newark alerted local law enforcement after a male gunshot victim arrived at the emergency department around 1:35 a.m.
Police say the victim informed police that he had been shot in the vicinity of 345 South 9th Street.
Officers promptly searched the area and discovered shell casings, but no additional victims were found at the scene.
The Newark Shooting Response Team was called in to assist with the investigation.
The motive behind the shooting remains under scrutiny as authorities work to gather more information and piece together the events leading up to the incident.
At this time, no arrests have been reported, and the community is urged to share any relevant information with law enforcement to aid in their efforts to solve this case.
