A 27-year-old Hillside woman was arrested on October 7th by Linden detectives and charged with stealing $16,000 in payments made to her employer.
Carla A. Sousa was charged with forgery and theft over $500, both third degree crimes.
Sousa was employed by Magic Smile Dental, of Linden. The office was notified by the bank as early as June, 2015, that checks made out to the business were diverted to Sousa’s personal bank account.
The police were notified in September, and after a two-week investigation by Detective Kevin Mikolajczyk, an arrest warrant was issued for Sousa.
She was released upon posting $20,000 bail pending a court appearance scheduled for later this month.
Conviction of a third degree crime can result in 3 to 5 years in prison and fines up to $15,000.
