Hillside Police Pursuit Ends in Crash; Two Arrested

A police pursuit in Hillside ended in a crash and with the arrest of two people.

According to police, on Friday Police observed a vehicle tailgating another vehicle on Hillside Avenue.

The Hillside Officer conducted a motor vehicle stop, at which time he reported smelling a strong odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle and observed the driver trying to conceal an object that he believed to be a handgun.

Police asked the occupants to exit the vehicle when the driver accelerated and fled the scene.

A pursuit ensued through various streets in Hillside authorities said.

The suspect's vehicle rammed officers vehicle in an attempt to escape. The pursuit came to a halt after the suspect's vehicle crashed into a utility pole.

Both the driver and the passenger fled the scene on foot.

Police said the female passenger was apprehended in the rear of a residence on North Broad Street while the driver was found in a parking garage on North Avenue in Elizabeth.

The suspect did not have a weapon in his possession at the time of his apprehension, however a ziplock bag containing hollow point bullets was located on the driver’s seat of the vehicle allegedly found.

Police said that they retraced the route of the motor vehicle pursuit while other officers and the Union County K9 Unit checked the area where the suspect fled on foot for a weapon.

The weapon - which the suspect reportedly threw from the vehicle during the motor vehicle pursuit - was eventually found on the front lawn of a Hillside residence.

Police Charged the driver of the vehicle Mr. Paul Mciver, with eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hollow point bullets and 2 counts of intent to distribute.

They also issued him a motor vehicle summons for following too closely and reckless driving.

Police barged Ms. Katelynd Molina, with resisting arrest and tampering with evidence.
