Hillside

A Hillside man was charged with two counts of carjacking according to police.

Yesterday, officers were called to 398 Yale Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m. for a report of a carjacking.

Upon arrival, police learned that 22-year-old Paul McPherson, of Hillside, ran out of his home as his 55-year-old mother arrived in her vehicle.

He reportedly approached her, snatched the car keys out of her hand, and then pushed her authorities said.

Authorities said McPherson struck her in the face with a closed fist, knocking her to the ground.

McPherson then drove west on Yale Avenue at an excessively high rate of speed when he lost control of the car and crashed into a house at 507 Yale Avenue, damaging the foundation.

He then exited the vehicle and approached another driver in a vehicle where McPherson opened the door of the car and told the 52-year-old driver to get out while punching him in the face.

Police units were able to intercept McPherson a short distance away and take him into custody.

Both victims were treated for their injuries, but refused transport to the hospital.

McPherson is charged with assault and 2 counts of carjacking. He is being held at the Union County Jail on $75,000 bail.
