Northern New Jersey grappled with heavy rainfall overnight, causing significant disruptions in Passaic County and flooding in flood-prone areas of Newark's Ironbound section and the North Ward.
The flash flooding began as light rain around 2:30 p.m. and progressively intensified into the evening.
In response to the worsening conditions, Newark Police closed a section of Clay Street at Mccarter Highway around 10 p.m. This area, notorious for flooding, was once again submerged.
The situation escalated as Passaic Police were compelled to shut down multiple sections of Route 21 close to 11:50 p.m., diverting traffic due to lanes being washed out by the rain.
Clifton Police also had to detour traffic on Route 3 near the Garden State Parkway, where severe flooding led to water levels rising reportedly approximately 3 to 4 feet high.
Additionally, Clifton Police are looking into an early morning Monday morning crash on Route 3, possibly linked to the overnight rainfall, now part of an active and ongoing investigation.
Despite these challenges, all affected roads are expected to be reopened in time for the Monday morning rush.
The quick response of the local police in managing these emergencies helped avert more significant disruptions and potential accidents.
NJ residents are advised to remain cautious and stay updated on road conditions.
